Sometimes the anterior fontanelle extends from the top of the head down a little bit onto the forehead. Sometimes this fontanelle does not close until after the child is two years of age. You need to ask the baby's doctor to check the fontanelle and ask him about it at your next visit.

The bones don't separate...they close. The fontanelle wil be open until around 18 months. Not sure about this ridge you are talking about.

the anterior fontanelle usually closes first, the posterior one will close around 18 months.

and yeah - the bones are separate now - they're not going to separate even further --- if they do, you've got issues that need addressing.

perhaps he's got a super brain growing in there and needs the extra room :)

BUT - the fontanelles are not on the face - what ridge are you referring to? his nose?

at 18 months that's not a problem, most children's fontanel haven't closed by this stage, speak to your heath visitor if you worried.
