I lived on the Big Island for five years and loved it. I'm really into nature so it's a great place if you love it too. Be careful of bad drivers...sorry, but it's true!
I would highly recommend that you go to Kilauea Volcano National Park. Stop at the visitor's center. Wear shoes if you will be walking on lava rocks. And don't take any lava rocks as souvenior! You can do some hiking to check out the lava fields, rain forests and petroglyphs, thurston lava tubes and of course the lava flow. Come back at night and you will see so many stars and it's a whole different experience seeing the lava flow at night. Also towards that direction is South Point's Green Sand Beach and Mountain View has a winery.
Hilo is the second largest town...there is Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots. It's rains a lot there...over 100 inches in a year. Beaches have black sand. Stop at Big Island Candies for Chocolate Dipped Shortbread Cookies and the Farmer's Market (Wednesday and Saturday morning) for local fruits, food specialities, flowers and a flea market.
On the way north from Hilo, there is Akaka Falls. Honokaa has Tex's Drive Inn with awesome malasadas (Portuguese donuts). Kamuela is a ranch town but it's very beautiful and cool. Kohala has a statue of Kamehameha The Great...one of three (I believe!).
Going southwest is Kona is the largest city on the Big Island and probably the most popular with tourists. On the way, you can write your name using write rocks on the lava rocks. It's warmer, doesn't rain as much and of course white sand beaches. Check out the shops on Ali'i Drive.
In the middle, there is Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. If you have a 4x4, you can go up to the telescopes on Mauna Kea. It snows there during the winter but summer doesn't. But it's still very cold and windy! Many get altitude sickness!
Have Fun!

rent a jeep it comes in handy for some places. take blue hawaiin helicopter ride my friend and I took the shorter flight becuz the longer one was cancelled due to bad weather on the other side of the island its a nice flight, you fly up the coast looking at waterfalls and more. I, then rented a small plane from a place at the airport and my friend and I had the whole plane to ourselves with a very knowledgeable pilot! If I remember right it might have been cheaper then the helicopter ride. I dont know how adventurous you are but, at the thurstons lava tub if you take your own gear you are able to explore in a tunnel. It was pitch dark so I couldnt tell you what was in there. Start down in the tub and you will see fencing with a warning sign( enter at own risk )or something like that. I was mad that I couldnt explore but didnt have nothing with me. The submarine ride was great and its right there in kona. I went to the luau at the royal kona resort all you can drink on their choice drink they will announce ,great show and food. went on atv tour in waipi'o valley cant remember name of outfit its been a few years but you go through sugarcane feilds, see waterfalls and smell the sweet wild ginger. go explore at the volcanoes national park, stop at rangers for info on conditions and where to spot lava. Go to all the different colored beaches. I could go on forever, just do some research or look for pamphlets when you get there. Oh yeah, take a raincoat with you and keep in your car you may need it, I went in the month of june and was glad i had it not just for the fast ending showers but it kept me warm in volcanoes park . Explore everything & everywhere. notice the smell over there, it is something that I will never forget!!!

Must go to Kona and Hilo. Be aware the attitude of the people (more from the women) there, it really stinks! Otherwise the food is good and it's a nice city.
Remember only to visit, not to live!
BTW, I'm not sure if Pearl Harbor is in Big Island.

I agree with what Taraloha said - the Big Island revealed is a great book - educational and entertaining. My family followed the books advice and we had a great trip in November of 2005. the one regret was that we rode the submarine - kinda cool but you can see MUCH better coral and fish if you go snorkeling on your own - my favorite place was near the Captain Cook monument - it was amazing - i bought a cheap waterproof camera and got some pretty great fish and turtle shots if you want to see them.... good luck and Aloha

Browse the site noted below. It is a guidebook 101 things to do. It is a magazine that you will find at the airport and many other places. Not necessarily unbiased but it will get you started.
Also go to your favorite bookstore and get "The Big Island Revealed" It is a very good guidebook that offers some unbiased opinions of things to do but also things to avoid. Everyone I have encountered you used the book thought it very helpful
