A very close friend has been addicted to painkillers for years. He is going to a clinic in the morning and I am trying to be supportive but neither of us really knows anything about it. He has tried to quit on his own but can't.

No, the clinic probably won't, but the medication itself can.

A friend of mine went into treatment for addiction of methamphitimines and the drug methadone was used to help ease detox.

It's one of those drugs that has been frequently questioned regarding the pros and cons of taking it. It can be very dangerous unless it it used under strict observance by doctor(s)
