I think that you should talk to the person and say that you don't feel the same way you felt when you first started going out and that you need to find out what you need in life.

Does this mean the last year has been pleasant? If you really want out, you just have to tell him/her. It's not easy, but it's the most mature and respectful thing to do. Don't make him/her figure it out and don't point fingers. Just say it's not working and you're not happy this way and you don't see it going anywhere. Mkae sure it's what you really want because some things are difficult to take back.
