I get Innova from the Pet Depot. It's more expensive but not THAT expensive and I think it's worth it. There's also Premium Edge low carb which has no grain. When you look at the ingredients, the first ingredient should NOT be a grain like corn or rice which is typical of most grocery store brands. Cats are meat eaters not cattle ;-) The first ingredient should be a meat or meat meal (not by-products). If you want to go with a dry food, that's about your best bet.

I like Iams. While it's not exactly cheap, it's one of the more reasonably priced "premium" cat foods. I know it's hard, but a good cat food is really important. It will keep your cat healthier, and may save you money in vet bills down the road. Another thing to note is that it's not good to switch kitty's food often. This can cause stomach/digestion problems for your cat. Try to give your cat the same food and not switch it if possible. If you do decide to switch foods, do it very gradually (start by giving 3/4 old food with 1/4 new food, then 1/2 old food and 1/2 new food, then 1/4 old food with 3/4 new food, then finally only the new food).

There is no such thing as cheap, healthy food. There are some less expensive options in good food, but good nutrition costs money. Absolutely no commercial food, whether it be Purina, Science Diet, Iams, or any other well known brands are good for your cats. The ONLY HEALTHY ANIMAL FOOD must be of holisitic quality...holistic means that the kitty food is make from food that is edible to humans, that everything they put in the food could be served to a person. Even Purina throwns old chicken, wrapper and all into their food. Some food brands take animals from shelters that have been put down into their food. There was a case of a girl eating a piece of name brand dog food, only to die, because of an allergic reaction to penicillin in the food that came from a dead animal being put into the food. I highly recommend Nutro Ultra Hollistic cat food, they make wet and dry varieties, and you can purchase it at any Petco or Petsmart for just a few dollars more a bag than food that isn't even food at all.

Purina One is a really poor quality of cat food and it is $1.72 per lb. with by-product meat, corn and brewers' rice (poorest quality of rice you can buy). I don't know what the kitten food costs and I can bet you that the ingredients are the same poor quality).
Do you pay $100 a month for a cell phone, $70 for cable TV, money on expensive coffee drinks daily? Why does a little more for your kittens' food seem like such a big deal? It will pay off in the end with lower vet bills as the kittens grow older. They are totally dependent on you to choose their food and it is your responsibility to give them the best you can find.
Go to: www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food" to get educated in reading labels on cat foods and selecting the most nutritious for your kittens.

purina kitten chow is one of the best out there don't let people talk you into spending more money for the fancier names just because vets and pet stores sell them, purina has everything your little guy needs. most people don't know that pet food is regulated by the fda as well if not better than human food.it must meet all nutritional guidelines.i've had cats all my life and they all started on kitten chow and have been very healthy and happy.good luck

My suggestion is to go to your local pet store and ask for their opinion. When I got my dog I was unaware of all the different ingredients in pet foods. The person at the store explained to me which ingredients were NOT good for dogs and which brands to avoid for both cats and dogs. Among them he named Iam, Purina, Pedigree, etc. Unfortunately, good food costs money. Personally though, my family has been feeding our two cats Iams for almost 12 years now, and our cats are healthy as can be.
If you are willing to pay the extra money you can possibly add a year or two to your cats life. If you can't afford it right now, don't worry about it.

Purina kitten food is a great food.. i think you are doing good with that! You can look into science diet if youd like, thats a good food too, but not really cheap. I think you should stick with Purina.
