I know how you feel, sometimes something you love so much can try your patience. I have a male cat that gets into everything, and I had minerals from my rock collection, glass, and figurines broken. While the losses of valuables has upset me, I still love my cat to pieces.
I would never spank an animal. That will only cause the cat to fear and dislike you. When you do disipline the cat, make sure to discipline only while the cat is in the act. That way he will associate the "punishment" with the crime. A loud NO, a good squirt from a water bottle, or a loud clap of the hands will work. If my cat even sees me reach to pretend to reach for the water bottle he will run.
Hopefully he will stop as he matures. One more thing, is he fixed? Having your cat neutured will help as well, and will make him a more pleasant cat.

You cannot area a cat. They haven't any notion of correct or flawed and do not fully grasp why they're being punished. What you'll be able to do is make the main issue uncomfortable for them and in order to convince them to not do it. There was once a time whilst I could yell at my cats and chase them across the condominium. They hate that. But I have got lazy in my historical age; now I set the puppy at the cats after they misbehave. The cats get a lesson, the puppy thinks it is a tremendous sport and my knees do not harm. Everybody advantages. And sooner or later the 4 people lay at the sofa and feature a sleep. It's a well existence.

It's just the nature of a cat. You can discipline with squirt bottles which will work as long as you're watching but they'll do what they want if you're not there. The best thing to do is accept that this is the way cats are, they're curious and want to explore everywhere. That's what I've done and it's a lot more peaceful around here.

Try distracting him instead of punishing him. When you see him doing something you don't want him to, throw a cat toy near him or call him over to be petted.
You can also try double sided tape around areas you don't want him on. If he doesn't have one, try getting him a cat tree to climb on instead of the bookshelves. Give him other things to explore like paper bags & cardboard boxes.
Try a water dish with a picture at the bottom. Sometimes cats have a hard time seeing where the water level is in their water dish, so when they seem to be playing in the water they are actually trying to determind were the water level is. If he is playing in the water, try getting him a water fountain to play with instead.

Get a clean spray bottle and fill it with water. When he jumps on the bookshelves spray him in the face once. This will take a little time, but it will work.

I think you should go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Squirt Bottles, Punishment and Cat Behavior". It should give you a better understanding of cat behavior, what will work and what will not.
Remember: what you put energy into will INCREASE. So if you are letting yourself get upset and feeling the need to correct what is typical cat behavior a little "letting go" of that energy may make everything improve without doing much of anything.

Ha ha. Cats discipline humans, not the other way around.
No, seriously, I would say continue saying NO. Also you may try spraying it with a water bottle.

Try buying a squirt bottle and giving him a squirt when you catch him doing something bad and/or stamping your feet fast to scare him/her. For my cat, that works so well that if they see you reach for the water bottle, they RUN!
Works especially well for Christmas tree climbing!
