Because the sun is low in the sky in winter when you want the most heating, you would want them facing south and mounted at a 65° angle to the ground. This is because the highest the sun gets on the shortest day at Boston MA is about 25 degrees (25.3 today at the calculator at the site below.

Passive solar heating...south is great. We have a sun room on our south side of the house. While it is freezing on the north side it, can be 80 in the sunroom just 20-30 feet away. So odd, but wonderful!

We also are installing rented solar panels this fall for our home. They too will be put on the south side. Some solar panels can actually move during day so they can track the sun and capture maximum sun energy.

I would say having the solar panels facing as directly south a possible would make sense.
