Thanks for asking this question. I like any art that has a meaning. I might not particularly like a specific painting's composition, but if I can understand an underlying theme, then I can be completely turned on by something. I didn't know much about Pre-Raphaelite artists to comment on them, but your question made me do a little research. I think I love the Pre-Raphaelites!Typically I find representational art more intriguing because it demonstrates the artist's ability to paint while the composition can still have meaning and not just be beauty for the sake of beauty. (Or shock value for the sake of shock for that matter.)
I am not as fond of modern art. I would put Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol in that category. While the impact of what they've done and the context and era in which they painted is clear, I am not as excited about seeing one of their works. I did see a Peter Max painting I really liked once. In general his style is not something I would want, but he has done a series of enhanced Van Gogh portraits that I just love. To me it's almost as if he is saying "cheer up Vincent!"
One of my favorite paintings of all time is The Florist by Childe Hassam but I also like contemporary Western art. I live in Denver and am really looking forward to visiting this year's Coor's Western Art Exhibit at the National Western Stock Show. Among the livestock is a little oasis of a gallery with some of the most beautiful western art. You should check it out online at http://www.nationalwestern.com/nwss/home/index.asp?rpg=/nwss/specialevents/coors.asp . There are some amazing contemporary artists. Thanks.

Pre-Raphaelite artists are interesting, but I hat there idea of elongating the noses of the women on canvas. It is so ugly! Yet, I like Edward Burne-Jones, but again I am choosy, so not all of his works are my favorites. The one I really feel haunted when I look at it is "Love among the Ruins". Another would be "The Bride of Lebanon". However, "Venus Venticordia" by Dante Gabriel Rossetti is so breathtaking, just as the "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci is to the rest of the Renaissance works.
I honestly am a fan to all art movements, whether it's Cave Art or Contemporary Art. However, I am more on the Post-modern side, which is by the way the age of art we're living in today.

I believe there are still demands for The Pre-Raphaelite artists. This is especially obvious in West Europe where most of the high class art-goers are around. In Far East Asian countries such as Japan and HongKong, there is also a surge for the demands as I am currently working in an art related business, so I am aware of that.

from a completely inartistic point of view I'd have to agree to preferring the pre-raphaelites. their work contains a certain feeling, as if the artist captured emotions in the very canvas. the work also looks more professional and unrushed- given that they had years in which to work on a single project. they didn't use knowledge of art alone but also that of mathematics and philosophy in their work.
modern art is also inspiring but i feel that everyone is doing the same thing and therefore we no longer recognise masters in the field of art. the difference between a brilliant work of art and one that will go down in history, as the best of that time, is blurred. no big names have been produced for quite a while.

I enjoy the Pre-Raphaelites, especially Waterhouse. I think most people enjoy modern art as well although I think they don't realize it and will often disregard more than a century of art over a Pollack or Picasso. It's a shame.
