OK, this is our third child. My wife was 10 days late on the first, 8 days late on the second. We are now expecting #3 and she is 4 days past due. This time, she has HAD IT and both of us would like nothing more than to have this baby RIGHT NOW. What can we do to speed along the process???

Wow! What can I say, everyone has said it all. I feel your pain too as all my 4 kids came late, but my wife was the worst with our 4th. It was weeks late and the moron doctor said to her oh it will come early as this is your 4th etc. That jackass made her think it should be there weeks ahead of schedule and it just made it being late a terrible ordeal. Sex works for some, but having it at that point in time is usually not exactly heaven, particularly for mom. Bumpy roads in a big 1943 fire truck with a poor suspension system was worthless. Seriously the child will come when it is ready. Actually there is a 4 week period, two weeks before and two weeks after the due date when the child is still "on time." Our last was due July 9th, she was expecting him by June 15th, and he came on July 20th. But when he came it was so fast, we had him at home. Not a good thing to do, but it was a good story for him to tell girls when he dated them. As a medical professional I can truly say just wait it out. Even artificial inducement has its potential problems and is not worth the convienience it seems to propose. Whatever happens I hope all goes well.

As others have suggested, you can have sex, do pelvic rocks (like swiveling the hips or dancing) or go for a walk. However, you might want to ask her doctor or midwife if there is any reason why she shouldn't do some of the following. If you ask if she should do these, the doc will often just say no, because they don't know how effective they can be. A more effective way of asking would be if there's any reason that she *shouldn't* try them.

1. Nipple stimulation. Either by herself, you, or a breast pump. It might seem funny, but some serious heavy petting and really rubbing/sucking on the nipples can stimulate labor. Midwifes recommend it all the time!

2. Drinking castor oil. Its nasty tasting stuff and might give her diarrhea or make her vomit, but its an age old way to start labor. She'll have to drink several ounces - just make sure she has some juice or something to chase it with.

3. Accupressure. There are a few specific points to try. Apply firm pressure to the meaty part of the hand between the thumb and forefinger. Also, there is a really tender spot about 3 inches above the ankle bone on the inside of the leg. Feel around with firm pressure from you thumb - it will be tender and she may jump when you find it. Apply firm pressure to those spots for as long as she can stand, at least 10 seconds or so at a time.

Those are some tried and true techniques that midwives have used for hundreds of years to stimulate labor. Just remember, only the baby can decide with he/she is ready to be born. Relax and enjoy the last few moments of calm before the storm!
Congratulations!

I started my labor the first time by having sex ( I was a week over due), and actually, the second time I asked the doctor if there was anything we could do to get me going ( I was on my due date), and he offered to just induce me, so I said ok. Or, you could ask them to rupture the membranes,( which sent my sister into labor), but it didn't work for me. Just ask your doctor at your next apointment what he can do for you. I totally feel you pain, good luck with everything!

Talk to your Doctor and get professional recommendations. You didn't say if labor was induced on the earlier pregnancies. If your Dr recommended anything during those, it might be OK to use the same processes. Either way, I say talk to him or her before trying anything yourself. Consider the safety of your wife & child before you give in to frustration.

oh lots of things, try having sex like all day long make a day out of it, sounds exhausting but it helps, run up and down stairs over and over agian, i had my only son 3 weeks early and it was from driving on a horribly bumpy road and a driveway with huge pot holes in it, not that i was trying either it just happened, eat some spicy stuff all day long stuff like that, theres also some kind of oil you can get at the store and mix it with orange juice it what they use to do long time ago to induce labor but cant think of the name, good luck though and congrats

You assume that all women are the same. It seems clear that your wife tends to be due a little later than other women. Just have patience, your baby can use the couple extra days of development in the womb.

Have sex. Worked for me. It causes her muscles to contract therefore inducing labor

Have sex, it thins the cervix. If she starts having contractions go for a walk. If they are labor contractions they will get harder and closer together.

UM Nothing??

Its obvious your wife's body has its own timetable. IF the others arrived late - then this one will to.

please wait 1 week and then if nothing happens you will be induced by the doctor.
