Why would the US retaliate in that way? Next thing you know we will have suicide bombers in the US.

suicide bombers are trained and indoctrinated from birth that this kind of death brings them honor in the afterlife. I have seen young kids spouting they hate Bush and America and I bet they cannot even find it on the map.
I prefer Patton's remark It is not good enough for you to die for your country, get the other dumb S.O.B to die for his.
I know of people who have done similar actions, either detonated a charge or covered a grenade with their body when there was no other option (check out the Metal of Honor Winners), but to deliberately have masses of suicide bombers, our culture just does not tolerate this kind of activity.
