What are some of the challenges that occur when translating one language into another?

How would you alter your speech if you
were speaking with someone who only had an elementary knowledge of your language? How have you (or will you) overcome any language barriers?

I managed to get directions to different places in Rome using a lot of English (native language) & some Spanish.

I do alter my speech if talking with someone whose first language is not English, I try very hard to not use idiomatic or slang expressions. In other words, keep it simple.

I used to teach French to Chinese student who only started 2 months before and all I had to do is write everthing ( almost everything ), speak loud and slowly so that they could understand. Forget idioms because they don't have the vocabular to understand it. Take your time and repeat if you see that the people you are talking to are lost.
