I want to start potty training my 4 year old tomorrow. I have not been able to potty train him until just recently because he had a cardiac arrest an hour after he was born. It has slowed him down developmentally. But now he is showing the signs like, waking up in the morning dry, interested in the potty.
I need some input on how to potty train him. He is my only child and I have no experience and my Mom seems too busy.

Throw him a potty party!!
Worked so well for my kids.

One tip with boys is teach them to stradle a toilet facing the tank. This way you have a consistant way to use a toilet where ever you go. No need for a tot toilet seat. For a boy as they get older they just back up and stand up to use big toilet.

Back to the party...
There are some really good books out there...one of them is NOT 'Once upon a potty" - my son imitated the boy who put a potty chair on his head as a hat.
Work up to it all week and have it on a weekend.
(optional) Invite friends and family members who are candid about such things.
Buy treats for him that you would not buy otherwise...really sweet drinks and salty snacks. (check with Dr. about sodium first) The combination of the two brings more oppurtunities for training.
Buy him new underwear with his favorite characters on it.
When anyone at party goes bathroom privately everyone hoots and hollars and gives praise for them when they come out.
If he has an accident...Sigh, I wish you would have done that in the bathroom. I really want to cheer for my boy...I know you can do it next time.

My daughter actually set her price and trained herself. Before age three she wanted a Dora the Explorer house. We had the party, no accidents. She got to open the 'present' at the end of the weekend.

One funny note...about the backwards toilet thing...it really works wonders. Just remind him to be careful not to jump off too quickly. My son once (and only once) jumped off the toilet. His *stuff* stayed on the seat. He howled!! I felt so bad...

If you can take a couple of days and let him run around naked in the house, that was what ultimately worked for us. I put him on the potty every half hour to start, and gave him a small reward (one M&M) for trying. I didn't use potty seats and went straight to the big toilet. It was easiest to let him sit on the toilet backwards with his legs over the edges rather than a potty seat. Pee and poop make it in very easily that way and there's no holding himself up. At four your son is most likely old enough to stand, but I still think it's easiest to train sitting down for both to start. Also, he might like having a ceremony of saying goodbye to diapers at his age. Let him throw them out and pick out some underwear. (We did best with boxer briefs since that's what his dad wears). No turning back once they're in the trash!

If he's ready and interested, it should be pretty quick and easy. Once my son was truly into it, it took a couple of days and he has slept in underwear at night and for naps ever since.

Good luck!

Well try asking him to go before and after he wakes up. Do this slowly so he will be interested. Buy him a 10.00 potty seat to go over yours one he picks out so it will be more fun. And watch him and try to take him every two hours then he will get the hang of it. We are doing ok and mine is 2. but in the sit. you were in take it slow at first.

the easiest thing i found so far go to the store let him pick out plenty of big kid undies and get rid of the diapers and pull ups completely use a kids potty or seat it will take time but they get it sooner then if you don't get rid of the others also reward him with stickers or candy or a box of assorted treats and toys

I am toilet training my 3 year old at the moment and it is hard but keep persisting. Stop using nappies through the day just use undies only put him in nappies at bedtime.
