It's because we are speciesists :-) We think that humans are more important than objects, therefore "it" would be an insult for any god. However, the early patriarachal cultures (especially the Hebrews, from which Christianity emmanated) had no gender neutral word for a being. In fact, God in ancient Hebrew texts is sometimes given feminine pronouns, sometimes male pronouns, sometimes plural pronouns! But a patriarchal culture is going to, in the end, default to a male pronoun, and over the centuries, that became a belief in a male God.

There is absolutely no ignorant questions! Including this one, I always wonder that myself as I went to christian private school all through my secondary education. I believe think when we call him father it is used as a "father" figure. So as we use father we reference him as a man. We reference alot of things as a motherly or fatherly figure, some reference the United States as a women "She is a great country." Its just some crazy things we do!

Because He is frequently referred to as our "Heavenly Father"...not heavenly it.

God is Spirit and has no sex organs. I think someone asking such an ignorant question can only be answered simple and to the point or ignored entirely. What a shame you are caught up on such a simplistic view of christianity.
