Thyroid problems are usually heriditary, and occurs in women more than men. Infection can cause problems, and can cause a sudden rise in thyroid hormones present in the blood. Some women can develop thyroid problems after pregnancy and delivering a baby.
Grave's disease is one hyperthyroid condition, it is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks hormones in the blood, and the gland itself.
Other causes include tumors, cancer, and pituitary gland problems. This condition is known as secondary hyperthyroidism. The pituitary gland secretes a hormone called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH, to get the thyroid to function. If the pituitary gland secretes too much of this hormone, the thyroid will be stimulated to create too much hormone.
Thyroid problems usually run in families. I have had Graves, and I now have Hashimoto's disease, which is a hypothyroid or underactive thyroid conditioin. All of the women on my mother's side of the family have thyroid problems.

In many cases it comes down to heredity. Thyroid problems run in my family. I think stress and poor diets can make the problem worse. I'm not sure if they have narrowed down the causes any more than that.
