I guess I thought knowing Christ and then denying him was one of the gravest of all sins? Does it make sense that Christ would have done that?

Jesus said, "You are Peter and on this rock I will build my church."
What Jesus did is the very nature of grace. It is this forgiveness that takes our sin and our failures and makes a victorious life from them.
"All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
There is not one person alive or dead who has not denied Christ in some way. To live in denial of Christ is death, but only because we chose to stay there. Jesus does not condemn us but we ourselves. I believe that if Judas had repented and not killed himself, Jesus would have extended the same hand of mercy that he gave to Peter. The same hand of mercy he extends to all of us.

This is part of the essence of Christianity. A person will be always be forgiven as long as they come to Christ for forgiveness. No matter the sin. How many Christians today have denied Christ in some way? I have, a lot more than 3 times. And yet those sins are nailed to the cross with all my others, and all your others, and all others period. That was the whole point of the cross, to make forgiveness available. If Christ couldn't forgive Peter, there was no reason for him to come to earth in the flesh in the first place.

Firstly, He gave him the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and entrusted him with His flock (John 21:15-17). Secondly, Peter repented. It is not repenting that is the gravest of sins. Thirdly, Matthew 16:17 indicates that it was God the Father Himself that chose Peter.

Every sin is forgivable, and that incident proves that even denying him is forgivable. It was the keys to the kingdom that he gave Peter, but not only Peter. The keys to the kingdom means the way by which we get there, which is through Christ, nit literal keys.

Peter Denied Jesus 3 times.

Judas betrayed Jesus.

well first of all it was not Peter, it was Judas who betrayed Jesus 3 times. remember Jesus said at the table, you will deny me 3 times before the cock crows..then when the guards came in, he gave Jesus a kiss on the cheek, then when Judas realized Jesus was telling the truth on what just happened.. well anyways, he was given the keys because he knew he would spread the word and tell all the miracles that had happened, to all the people in the church who did not believe as he once did.

yes because Christ also know that humans are flawed and prone to sin. He also knows that people can change and He knew that the Holy Spirit would change Peter into the first leader of the church

Sure it does.

And Peter never denied Christ again, even when he was himself crucified.

Jesus would have forgiven Judas if he had asked, too.
