I too have been doing research on this because I am 5'3 and weight about 205. I am starting the YMCA in a week or two.
Does Bally have a pool? If you have not been working out that much you do not want to go gun-ho and hurt yourself. Water aerobics helps you get stated without hurting your joints.
No water? Then I would make sure that you do not do anything that hurts for the first week. Take it easy!
I am going to sign up for classes like yoga so I will stick with the program more.
Like walking?
Try this, walking on a treadmill slowly and then increase the speed over months until you are almost running -do not run. Then try and increasing the slope you run until you are almost running. Then do the same steps with running.
Weight training? Try to alternate you top part of your body one day, one day break (Do cardio), the bottom half the next, one day break (Do cardio).

The way to lose weight is through cardio exercises. This means spending time on a treadmill, elliptical trainer or step trainer. All the rest of the weight lifting exercises are strictly for toning. The best way to exercise is to mix twenty mins of cardio with twenty of weights and then twenty cardio twenty weight. This would be the best for starting out since you don't want to overexert yourself to start out with. Ask the representatives at the gym to give you some ideas for weight exercises to target the areas that you feel you need help with and write up a little routine that you can check off every time you go. Hope this helps it did for me. Good luck.

I love them all (machines)! Weights are my favorite. Building muscle increases metabolism and strength so you can burn more calories. I think they can all serve a purpose, but start by learning how to use each one. Someone in the gym can help you with that. You want to make sure that you are safe. Then, make a plan on which body parts you want to work on each day. For example:
Day 1: thighs, glutes, tricep, bicep

Pick machines that will work these areas and use those machines, maybe doing 1 set of 12 and then rotating to the next machine, doing a total of maybe 3 sets. Start with whatever you are comfortable with and then increases as needed.

(My favorite machine is the leg press, but once you learn to use as many as possible, you have lots of options!)

On alternating days, you might want to try a class or just work on the treadmill. Start as slow as necessary and then gradually increase speed and incline for some burn!

My advice to you is to start out with treadmill or stationary bike and variate the speed by intervals. Do variant speed as follows:
1,2,&3 minute - just get heart rate going slowly.
4th minute - medium pace
5th minute - all out
6th - slow it down
7th - smooth walk
8th - medium pace
9th - all out
10th - slow it down

Keep doing this for twenty minutes and you will see fast results as long as you are dieting correctly. Remember a diet is a lifestyle change and food is not about taste so much as function.

Also pick up the dumbbells, they are awesome to do some light workout, because you use other muscles around your target muscle.

I would get onto the Elyptical Crosstrainer and just use it for an hour. Then walk the track for your remainding time there. Take it easy at first and do lots of cardio.

go with the cardio equipment first/cardio classes. when at home, power walking outside is great too. don't forget too eat smaller portions. don't starve either and treat yourself as well. worry about the weights after.

first i hope you didn't get a contract with them cuz we did & they screwed us hard. anyway to answer your question I know for sure you need to do cardio to get your heart pumping so I suggest at least 45 minutes to an hour on the treadmill walking or running it doesn't matter as long as you get your heart beat going. Hope that helps a little.
