In an ideal world, the father should have a say--but he should never have the final word. Why? Because women can die from pregnancy and childbirth. In fact, until the 20th century, getting pregnant was the single most dangerous thing a woman could do in her life and caused more female deaths than anything else. Even when a woman survives childbirth, her body is irrevocably changed--hence post-partum depression, bladder control issues, blood pressure issues, etc. That is why.

I agree. Men should have equal rights in all things when it comes to the child. It makes no difference if it is in the woman's womb for nine months, it takes equal parts from a man and woman to make a child, they should share equal rights. A woman should not be able to give that child up for adoption either, without the father's consent. If a man and woman split up, the courts should stop this **** of granting the woman custody, just because she is a woman. If they are both equally able to care for the child, custody should be split 50/50 and no support to anyone. Their is nothing more I hate than seeing a woman that is a lazy sack of ****, have custody and support granted to her, then she refuses to work and lives off the child support payments. Child support is for the child. If the man is required to support her, the court would grant her spousal support. Two of my friends have children to women that they are no longer with. Both of the women suck up that monthly child support check, and live off of it and a welfare. The one has been in jail twice for heroin, since having the baby, and still has custody!!! When my friend took her to court for full custody he was denied. Since it was proved that she wasn't working, but living with her mom at the hearing he tried to have support reduced, because daycare was figured in. Since she wasn't working, she shouldn't need the cash granted for a babysitter. Guess what. When they reviewed his pay stubs and he had gotten a 50 cent raise in the last year, it went up!!! What kinda **** is that? This guy is just making over minimum wage and is having to pay out around $400 a month. He had to move back in with his parents because he can't afford to live on his own. I am sorry but when it comes to the matter of children the courts have a long way to go. It is time things change!
EDIT:
Why do women use the excuse, it is in the woman's body for nine months in these arguments situations? So what? That isn't the man's fault. It is nature or god's fault. You cannot use that as an excuse to deny someone equal rights in a situation. Just because men are scientifically proven to be physically stronger than the female of the species, doesn't give you the right to deny the woman a certain job, because of that reason. It is the same damn thing. A man can love, hate, cherish or spoil a child just as equally as a woman and should have equal rights to do that. To the person that posted either right before or after me, you say a man shouldn't have an say, because he could use that to have the girl embarrassed at school, and called fat and a slut behind her back, cause it would ruin her social life for nine months. What do you think happens to a guy that gets a girl pregnant by accident, say the condom broke, and wants the girl to have an abortion, but she won't? His life is ruined for 18 years, by paying support. Like I said about my friend above, he cannot afford to live on his own because he is taken for so much child support each month. It works both ways. That is why the rights should be equal not matter what. At least that way everyone gets a fair shake.

i must agree with Erin J. if the man wants the baby so much, he should carry it for 9 months.

you must also think of the social aspect. here's the hypothetical situation: a girl and a guy are in high school. they are having sex regularly. the condom breaks and she gets pregnant. the guy is catholic and he refuses to allow the girl to get an abortion. now, the girl must and will carry a child around for 9 months, be labeld as a sl ut for having sex, be excluded from school class activities such as gym because of her condition, be excluded from social activities such as dances because of her condition, and be called fat behind her back at a time where physical appearence is everything. but the guy, he can participate in gym, go to dances, still look great, and he is treated like a god for having regular sex. and i haven't even touched the physical consquences.

how is this fair to the girl?

now, you may say that this could have been solved by the kids not having sex. first of all, DUH! and second of all, you will never be able ot stop kids from having premaritial sex. ever.

Well, if the woman's having an abortion because she got raped I don't think the man will be coming in all in a jiffy, what with the police right there.

Well, that would be nice in a perfect world. Unless the donor of said sperm is a rapist, child molester, or likely to say they want the kid, and then run off in the third trimester.

Fact is, it's her body it's growing in, not yours. The only control men can ever really have is to do their part not to make a baby in the first place.

I agree too, unless having the baby would really ruin the mother's life (like having a baby at 18 and not being able to go to college, for example).

The time to figure this one out is before ever becoming intimate. If you feel strongly about this issue, you shouldn't be with anyone who believes that abortion is an option.

Great! Then the man can raise the baby while the woman abandons both and fight her the rest of his life for non-support and struggle financially because of it.

Yep. That sounds fair to me.

I agree with you but the majority of people think it's a womans right. I say educate your sons about this so they are never in this position.

I agree with you. I can't imagine being a man and then being in that position. It IS half his child and he SHOULD have a right to raise that child and love it and give it a life. I have three kids...what's nine months of a little uneasiness compared to a whole LIFE?
