Good question. NO, there wasn't a big battle actually fought on the Hill Cumorah. As you may know, that is where Moroni buried the sacred plates. What happened to him after that, of course, was not recorded, but since he was only 1 of about 5 remaining Nephites, he was killed or died shortly after the plates were deposited in the hillside. But since there were so few remaining Nephites, no, there was no major battle at Hill Cumorah.

The last battle was said to have taken place in the land of Cumorah. We are also told that Moroni buried the plates in the hill cumorah. Now if this was the same place, we know not. It could be that there were two cumorahs. One where the battle took place somewhere around the southern us/northern Mexico, and the second being the place where Moroni buried the plates. Whether this is true or not we don't know. All that we do know is that the two places were called Cumorah, and that Moroni wandered a while before burying the plates.

There is a book out called "In Search of Cumorah" (see link below) which I bought a few months ago and didn't finish reading, plus I either packed it away in a box or loaned it to someone I'm picking up today from a return trip from Mexico. The book seems to indicate that there could have been more than one Hill Cumorah, as people in those days might name more than one place after something. It was a good book, what I read of it, but I just can't lay my hands on it right now.

Well, your question is ample evidence that Joseph Smith merely translated the Book of Mormon, not that he wrote it. Here's why:
A careful reading of the Book of Mormon reveals that Moroni carefully hid up all the records EXCEPT the plates that became the Book of Mormon. That hiding spot is the Hill Cumorah, the site of that great "last battle". Moroni KEPT the gold plates, then fled from those who wanted to kill off every member of his group.
I don't recall how long Moroni fled his enemies, but it was for enough time to walk to New York State from just about anywhere in North or Central America. THEN, he buried the plates.
Of course, Joseph Smith and the early church leaders were focused on what they should find important -- the great witness of Jesus Christ found in the Book of Mormon. Only later did we read the text carefully enough to note that the Book of Mormon events took place in a land without any snowstorms, sleet, etc. Further, the entire story of the Book of Mormon takes place in a land that is only a few hundred miles long, and about 100 miles wide.
Thus, most thoughtful members now believe that the Hill Cumorah --that is, the last battle site -- was somewhere in Mexico or Central America.

Not the Hill Cumorah we know of where Joseph received the plates. What is interesting to me...is that this 'hill' where the last great battle took place, must have been big. I mean there were thousands and thousands of people, it must have been big enough to accommodate such a large crowd right? Have you ever seen the Hill Cumorah? It is tiny.
I strongly believe there was another place where the battle occured, I don't believe it could have been there. If it was important to our doctrine, or the gospel, don't you think we would know where it was exactly? Think about it, God had the prophets write things we needed to know and there are lots of parts where it says they were commanded or felt like they shouldn't write certain things...
I think it's God's way of weeding out the faithless...those whom are just looking for their own version of "physical" evidence to prove or disprove the Book of Mormon.
anywho, just my two cents.

As Leo says the problem is no proof of battle, but here is the question, just because there is no proof as he says doesn't mean that it didn't happen either. Just no PHYSICAL evidence found yet.
We just have to go by faith and belief, just like many things in the Bible, can NOT be proven either, but we take them on Faith.
If you were to research the Book of Mormon lands they were down around Latin America.
There have been many things mentioned in the BoM that have been proven archaeologically.

the last great battle of the BoM was supposedly fought there. Problem for Mormons is, there's no proof any such battle took place
