My kitty is 12 years old and her health is deteriorating little by little. I imagine that she will live for another couple of years, but I want to know if there is anything that I can do to make her happier and healthier aside from lots of TLC. Also, she has lost some weight and is a little skinny. What can I feed her to make her gain some weight? I have tried kitten food but it didn't work. Please if anyone has any suggestions... I love my kitty so so so much and just want her to feel good and be happy!

my wife worked at a vets office before she died and my best advice to you after seeing some things there and my experience with my two cats is to take her to a vet right now. Cats usually gain weight as they get older, not all, but usually. A sudden weight loss could indicate a major problem that if let go could endanger her life or make her feel worse. I would do that and have her checked out for worms, cancer, etc. If there isn't a problem the vet could probably give you some advice on weight gain.

Hopefully there isn't anything wrong. I have known cats who lived up in their 20s and even some that had health problems, yet they seemed happy and content as long as their owners loved them and gave them lots of attention.

When geriatric cats lose weight, it sometimes is seen as normal. BUT almost always there is an underlying cause. At 12 years old, she should be able to live a few more.. but if i were you i would stick with senior food, but take her to the vet for a full blood workup. You may want to get her tested for hypothyroidism if she continues to lose weight. Just keep a close eye on her! So many things could go on in an older kitty that arent detected until its too late. Good Luck and I understand your love, they are like children and the thought of losing them is unbareable!

First make sure her food is kept on the floor, so she does not have to jump up on a counter or somthing high to eat. My cat went through the exact same thing I had to put her asleep a month ago. She lost a lot of weight also and I took her to the vet and the vet was able to give her this food that helps with weight gain, it was a wet canned food. I'm sure you have plenty more years with your kitty! Good Luck!!

take her to the vet
12 is not old
I worked at vets before and I saw cats that lived to be 20 and older
When my 12 year old cat started loosing weight I took her to work- turned out she had cancer
The cat I have now is almost 11 and he still acts like a kitten

Hi Samantha,

Of course TLC is the most important. Older cats do become thin, that is normal, but I would recomend that you take her to your Veterinarian for a check-up. The Vet may have recommendations that can really help, such as with the food issue.

Thanks for caring!

just feed her a good brand of food, not the real cheap kind, use something recommended by your vet and keep vet visits up to date, they will help you through this. Also, a nice warm heated area for her to sleep in.lots of petting too. I wish you many more years together.

The cat I simply obtained from the animal refuge used to be declawed. He used to be a stray, part starved, observed alongside the freeway. I suspect that he by some means obtained out of the condominium wherein he used to are living, and could not get again house. If your buddy is definitely definite the cat will certainly not get external, then might be declawing is the first-class resolution.

First thing you need to do is take her to your vet. There is a reason she is losing weight. It might just be a simple thing like because she is older, she has lost her appetite. But in case there is something else, you would want to catch it early.

Find a quality senior cat food (IAMS is good) . Kitten food it not good for her. Also think about adopting another cat (a young adult) sometimes this can help restore your kitty's youth.
