I think people should send a reply and say thanks. It means you atleast thought about them and remembered thier birthday. A greeting card is a greeting card both online and off.

No you weren't incorrect. there is not any might desire to call somebody and tell them you receivd a card. My MIL is like "T". If she sends a birthday card or anniversary card, she'll call me the night she figures it arrived, and not point out it and wait until I point out it (which i don't inevitably do), then later interior the communication she'll say, "Oh, you probably did not point out the anniversary card I despatched, did not you get it?", like she became only fishing for a thank you. Grrr.

With some friends i don't expect a thank you back.
If i send one to my mother or something i normally warn her first because she wont follow links or open attachments unless pre arranged first.. So i would send a email or a phone call explaining to open it and how too do it.
yes a thank you is nice to have back.. but i don't normally send ecards..
I have had acquittance's spam me with ecards and as some of the images are nice and i like the card.
I dont like getting spamed by them either.

It's not usually customary to say thank you for a card. You wouldn't expect a reply if it were paper, would you? I think the same rules apply.

e-cards are lazy and thoughtless -- says: "I couldn't be bothered to buy you a card, sign it, stamp it, and walk to the mailbox to mail it." Yes, you should thank a person for it just to be courteous, but if you really value a friend and want to make him/her feel good, send a card snail mail.

I don't think it would hurt anyone to take 3 seconds of their time to reply back a simple "thanks for your birthday wishes". It would actually be nice if more people in the world would take the time to be nicer and attempt to show their grateful for things. :)
