Two of what I consider the top five sites were already mentioned (#2 rootsweb and #3 usgenweb) but there are three others you should know about:

#1: http://www.familysearch.org - provides access to all the online data compiled by the Mormon church. They have more than any 10 other sites, and it's all free. I'm not a Mormon, but this site is #1 by any measurement. I have found more data on my ancestors through this site than all other sites combined.

#4 http://www.cyndislist.com - Cyndi's list is where you find all the other sites. It is THE web directory of genealogy sites. Both well organized and searchable, it's an invaluable resource.

#5 http://www.google.com - OK, it isn't exactly a genealogy site, but smart googling will find stuff about your ancestors on the web that you can't find any other way.

Follow the link below. This is a great list of genealogy websites that was listed on the Genea-Musings blog a few weeks ago.

The best sites on which to conduct genealogy searches depend on the location and the time period, but in general you can also try http://www.ancestry.com . Even though Ancestry.com is a subscription database, many public libraries and local Family History Centers offer free access to Ancestry.com.
