sounds like a cracked manifold

Noise can also be transmitted through the intake and air breather. If someone has removed the stock unit and put on an aftermarket air breather that is really "open", you can get a "throaty" sound from the top end of the engine as well. Like the other guys said, the exhaust system could also be suspect. You can spray some soapy water on the exhaust manifolds while the engine is running. If you see soap bubbles appearing from exhaust escaping, you will have located an exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks are also very dangerous to your health too.

With those symptoms, my suspicion would be that you have a problem with the muffler or exhaust system. You also my have a leak or problem with the head gasket of the exhaust manifold.

My guess is you have a 4.0 Litre? Common to that engine is a crack on the exhaust manifold directly on the flange itself. Easiest way to fix is to have it welded back up but they usually fail again. Other fix is to replace the exhaust manifold.
