Please don't get her a "fake" diamond ring unless you've discussed it with your lady. I completely understand the sentiment of not overspending your budget and having the engagement be about your love and not the ring but trust me if she ever found out you lied to her she will be very upset. If you really do think its a great idea to get a fake diamond then tell her right away that its what you can afford and wanted to get her something that looked nice. If you hide the fact then you are starting off your engagement with a lie and thats not amusing at all.
Investing money is always good advice but you probably need the return fairly quickly. Selling things is a great idea, have a garage sale or do ebay. You'll be amazed with how much money you can come up with just getting rid of stuff. I hear you can make money by puting ads on blog, you could write a funny one about how you are trying to save money and I bet people would read it. You could also offer to do some yard work or favors for people, that money could add up fast too. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat! You can actually get a full diamond bridal ring set in gold for under $500...quite affordable, and then you can even put it on credit or break it up into payments. Even top jewellers can't differentiate a CZ from a diamond without bringing out a laser beam, so don't worry about CZ looking fake or family and friends recognizing the difference. CZ only becomes obvious when people get rings that are ginormous, and if it were a real diamond they definitely couldn't afford it on their income. CZ is beautiful and many actually prefer it because it is perfect, whereas a diamond is not. A semi-precious stone would be a good idea. Nice if you like a pop of colour too. You can get amazing deals by doing your research and shopping online. You can get something cheap that will look good in the short-term so in the future you can upgrade to something that will be good for the long-term. You can get a plain band, you don't have to have a gem on an engagement ring. Get a promise ring with a diamond for $100 and call it an engagement ring. It's only cheaper because the diamond is smaller than a typical engagement ring and mostly because it has a different name. Go cheap on the setting. Titanium is an amazing durable material that will last your lifetime and is very affordable, almost always cheaper than gold. Get a smaller gem in a pave setting so you get the same bang for less buck. Go second-hand. Look at online classified for people looking to make some of their money back on a ring they have never worn or rings from a broken marriage, people looking to upgrade, etc; You can really get a very decent engagement ring that will last a lifetime at a cost that won't mean putting off other dreams such as buying a home. Good luck :)

I applaud your efforts to get your girlfriend a nice ring.
Here are a few things to think about. Did she give you specifics on what kind of ring she wants?
Have you set a budget for the ring? My husband went to a manufacturer/wholesaler and had my ring made--on a budget. It ended up apprasing for double what he paid for it. If you go to a manufacturer and tell them your budget they'll help you find a diamond that's within your means.
Check out moisannite or lab created diamonds. They cost less but they're gorgeous. My friend has a moisannite engagement ring and you can't tell it's not diamonds.
Do you have anything you can sell to raise a little cash? My friend sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist.
Finally, you might not want to stress so much about this. Just keep saving. You don't have to get engaged unless you're ready.

Try shopping for an engagement ring on ebay or overstock.com.
If you don't find anything on ebay or overstock, try goldenmine.com. Here is a nice one:
http://www.goldenmine.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4130
Also, check out the sales at the mall. My fiancee bought my ring at Belden's and it wasn't too expensive: about $600 on sale.
No one says you have to spend thousands of dollars on a ring. Save your money for the wedding, or better yet, the marriage itself. Talk to your fiancee. Tell her your budget and have her pick out something with you.
Also, consider a stone other than a diamond: perhaps a sapphire with diamonds or her birthstone. I found these at Ice.com:
http://www.ice.com/customer/product_detail.jsp?product=64482863
http://www.ice.com/customer/product_detail.jsp?product=128063100
But, definitely, before you buy, talk to your girlfriend and see what she would prefer: getting a smaller diamond (you can always upgrade later) or a different gemstone. Now that I've seen some of these rings, I'm tempted to get them myself!

I think you need to go to your local mall, there's usually like a Kay's Jewelers. Since you have a job you can possibly finance the ring threw them. They check how much money they can loan you, take what you can get threw that. They usually give you a grace period so you don't have to start paying right away, you can get a real diamond and all you have to do is make small monthly payments. They also have great lost or stolen coverage for the diamonds.

I have a better suggestion.
There is a seller on ebay by the name of alexandritee. They sell the most high-end cubic zirconia that is available. I know, it sounds horrible not to get a diamond, but trust me - I got three from them to make earrings and my engagement ring, and you honestly cannot tell. They are PERFECT. The only way you can tell they are not diamonds is if you take it to a jeweler and they use the laser on it.
Now I get a ring with 2.25 carat "diamond" in it, and it will cost only the price of the setting, and 3 bucks for the stone. You can't beat that.
If you don't want to tell her, she won't ever know. Trust me.

anything of value you could sell ? or you could try the papers to see if there are rings for sale in them, at a good price.. sometimes you run across a ring that was never worn or barely worn and the person selling just wants it gone.... you could also try putting all your change into a piggy bank at the end of each day, change saved this way adds up real fast... do yard work on wk ends for neighbors or errands........ scale down the price range of ring too..... a diamond is forever no matter what the size !!!! God bless

go to a jeweler and see if they will give you a line of credit. a lot of times they will allow you to spend 10% over what they offer you as your credit line.
if no luck with that...try a pawn shop. be careful with that though...a lot of them overprice things.
you could get her a small diamond for now and trade it in later or have some added when you have more cash.
the ring is the beginning of the excitement for the bride if she is materialistic or not. are your feelings fake...no. so the diamond should be real!
good luck and keep working toward what you want!

I don't know about raising money, but if you are looking for a good deal, try ebay, or go to the jewelers websites, most of the time if you order online you can get a better price for items.
Congratulations to you.

I know that it is very important to you to have a real diamond, but ask your intended if she minds if you bought a high quality zirconia. If she does not mind, check QVC, HSN and Shop NBC. QVC has at least three Diamonique yellow gold rings with a white gold setting. Promise her that you will upgrade as you spend more years together. I hope this helps.
