We had a spiral sliced ham today and I cut most of the meat off the bone but saved it, thinking it was the thing I should do. But now I am now sure what to do with it.

Ham and Bean Soup

Ingredients

-1 pound dried Navy or Great Northern beans
-1 ham bone, with some meat on it
-2 teaspoons dried sage or savory, crumbled
-2 celery stalks
-1 carrot
-1 potato, preferably baking type
-2 onions
-2 cloves garlic
-2 tablespoons chopped parsley (optional)
salt and pepper

Directions

Sort through the beans and remove any debris. Rinse, add 6 cups water and soak overnight or use the quick-soak method: boil, uncovered, 2 minutes, cover and let stand 1 hour.
Drain soaking water, add 2 quarts fresh water, the ham bone (after cutting most of the edible bits from the bone, leaving some to flavor the soup) , sage or savory, and a generous quantity of freashly ground pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, for 60 - 90 minutes or until beans are soft.
Remove bone from the soup. If there is any edible meat on it, trim off and add back into the soup. Dice onion, carrot and potato. Slice celery and mince or press garlic. Add vegetables to the soup, along with 2 teaspoons of salt. Simmer until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. For a thicker soup, puree some of the vegetables and stir back in. Add reserved ham, taste for seasoning and sprinkle with chopped parsley, if using.

Pea soup!

Any decent bean-based soup demands a ham bone or hocks. I make a stock with the bone, then remove it before adding the beans, peas, or what have you. I also save some of the leftover ham, which is always too much to eat anyway, and dice it up to add to the soup as a seasoning.

Beware giving a dog a bone...especially indoors. Ham does Bad things to my dog.

A ham bone is a great way to start off ham and bean soup. My mom just made the soup after saving our Christmas ham bone. It was great soup!

Soup! Bowl the bone and add your desired ingrediants -- peas, ham, white beans, spices. You can make a great split-pea soup from a ham bone. The Web site www.foodnetwork.com has a lentil and ham recipe.

NO! This will kill the dog! Ham bones splinter and get caught up inside of the dog and puncture! I know this to be true, I can tell you of three people who gave ham bones to dogs (because they loved their dog) and in the morning the dogs were dead laying in a pool of blood! I am going to trust that you listen to me and that I saved a dogs life tonight
