Forget that skillet frying stuff or microwaving unless you like soggy nasty bread. *hackptooey*.
First get you some real cheese. I don't mean any of thay processed stuff you find in your grocery store in singles. Get you some real cheese, Chedder is my personal favorite but almost any cheese that is not overly dry or too moist will do. You wouldn't want to use something like Parmesan or Bree for this reason. Then you get some good day old French or Italian Bread. Give it a very light spread of butter on the inside of the bread, a little salt and a hint of cracked black pepper. Put your cheese in, I use two slices, then brush the outise with a little bit of Extra virgin Olive oil and grill it on a REAL GRILL. Just until you get some nice grill marks and the cheese is starting to melt. take it off the grill and let it set for a couple of minutes (it will continue to melt a bit. Then enjoy. Best grilled cheese samich ever.

Grilled cheese toast: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Put cheese on bread. Place bread and cheese in oven. Check in about 10 minutes. Don't overcook, the cheese will get a tough inedible skin, throw this out and repeat until satisfied.
Cheese toast sandwich: Using a G/F LMFF machine is preferable. Mayo both inside pieces of bread place one slice of American, Swiss, Pepper jack; whatever your pleasure. Thin slice onion and tomato, (at this point I apply an additional slice of cheese) place bread on top; butter both outside pieces of bread and either in a frying pan or aforementioned cooker, melt and toast to you individual preferences.

Wouldn't you just first toast the bread, then put cheese between the two pieces of toast, and then butter the outsides of the toast and grill them in a frying pan?

Butter two slices of bread. Turn the bread over, so that the butter side is on the outside, and put however many slices of american cheese you want. Then you put it on a pan on the stove and heat it up until the cheese is melted.
