the station is about a 1/2 mile away, however i have never had this problem before, any recommendations on what to do?

Sorry, but the thickness of the insulation won't do anything for your problem.

Since this hasn't happened before, the station probably did some transmitter maintenance and didn't get everything back together correctly (it happens). Before you do anything, you should call them and complain -- they'll probably re-check their work and fix it. If they don't, they should come out to your place to fix it. If you're in the USA, you can complain to the FCC -- the stations aren't allowed to interfere with other electronics, so they MUST fix the problem.

Check your wiring to see if you need to replace your speaker wires with a brand that is better insulated. If your wires have thin insulation, they may be acting as a FM antenna.
