they are good dogs! mine stayed calm throughout most his life, he really wasnt a hyper dog, and im pretty sure that they arent usually. They are friendly and gentle dogs as long as they are raised well! However because of their size, they have problems with arthritis and hip dysplasia. As the dog gets older you will want to start him on glucosamine, whether or not he has the arthritis. This will help slow the process down. They also dont live very long.. 9-10 years is about right!

Well it all depends on how you treat the animal. If the pup is going to be treated well and loved then it will show this back. If you train the dog to be a guard dog then that is what it will be . St Bernards need lots of room. I hope you have a home with a nice size yard. It is not a dog to have in an apartment or a place with a cement yard . If you know what I mean. Make sure the pup is going to have plenty of room to run. And make sure your not going to get tired of the drooling later.

I have a St. Bernard girl dog. Her name is Angel. Her birthday is Jan. 11th. She is almost 2 years old. I love her! She is soooo adorable. She is an indoor dog and behaves herself just fine inside. She does drool, but only when there is food around she wants. The only problem we have with her is she likes to go visit the neighbors next door. We try to keep her in our play yard that is fenced in, but occasionally, she gets out the door and goes visiting. We have another dog that is a terrier mix and the terrier is the alpha dog. It's kind of funny to see a smaller dog control a bigger dog. Anyway, if you have room, get a Saint. You won't be sorry!

Great dog, but it is critical they be given a lot of time and training while still puppies. Otherwise, you have a big lug with no manners who eats and poops a lot. (Imagine him jumping up on you or your friends, not coming when called, etc. etc.)
If you are willing to put in the time and commitment - go for it! St. Bernards are one of many fantastic dogs.

If you're going to buy a St. Bernard, you NEED to buy one from a REPUTABLE breeder who screens their dogs free of any hereditary diseases. One of the major health problems in St. Bernards is hip dysplasia. Another is bloat. If your dog comes down with Bloat, that's a $1500 emergency vet bill. Please read up on these beautiful dogs BEFORE buying one. You need to make sure your friend has screened their dogs. You need to make sure your friend isn't just breeding their dogs for money. If it's all for money, they are irresponsible and they wouldn't have screened their dogs.
**** HEREDITARY DEFECTS
The following is a list of common hereditary defects found in Saint Bernards for which breeders should screen their dogs. Problems, however, are not limited to this list:
-Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
-Entropian (see AKC Rules governing dog shows; dogs who have undergone corrective surgery CANNOT be shown)
-Epilepsy
-Bad Temperament
-Heart Defects

I owned a St .Bernard and she was a wonderful puppy.Very loving and cuddly and easy to train. As an adult she was just as smart, loyal, loving and beautiful. Her weight got up to 140#s but she carried it very well.Unfortunately in spite of all the best care we could give her she didn't live long enough. She died at age 8 yrs.We were devastated but we cherish the few years we had with her.

Try a rescue group (you can find them on the internet), there should be one in your state. That way you can save a dogs life and help out a rescue group too. Or call humane socieities, they sometimes have them in the pound 'on death row'.
They eat A LOT. They also poop a LOT. They are cute and loveable but are VERY big.

their fairly good dogs, some are very fun to play with but they can grow to be monstrous. So be prepared to have a big dog.
