I don't know how you define crap-py, because I think any gift is just what it is: a gift, and it should be received in the spirit of gratitude. You say thanks! and say how useful it will be to you. If it is a knick knack, you put it up for display. If it is clothes, wear them. It helps not being picky.
Edit: In the case that you are a man who received a jewelry making kit, I would just try using it. I have received some unusual gifts that I would never think of buying for myself, and I have found some use for them. I know it may seem like a weird gift, but jewelry making is a good way to learn patience. But I do understand your feelings.

I would say " Thank you ". And then I would take it to an org. so there would be someone who would not think the same way and it would be of use to the person instead of wasting it and say things I might regret. What is cr@py to one might be a treasure to someone else... Or at least a bargain! LOL.
Happy new year to you.

Always remember that the person who gave you that gift might not think of it as "cr@py" and that person might have spent money on it, too.
With this in mind, what did your mummy teach you about good manners?
Just say "thank you"
Afterwards, you can give it to a poor or lonely person. He would truly know how to apreciate a gift................

Be really nice about it. Try not to look disappointed, but don't look overly happy either. Make sure to thank the giver of the gift anyway. If you got something like ugly clothing then only wear it around the house, or say you outgrew it or it shrunk in the dryer if the person who gave it to you asks. Give it to good will if you really don't like it. If they give you a gift receipt with it, then exchange it. People don't want you to have a present you hate. and always remember, no matter how cliche' "it's the thought that counts."

I would say, "thank you for thinking of me" really, it's the thought that counts. Some people don't even get presents. The thing that's really important is that someone appreciates your existance enough to get you something.

Tell the person "Thank-you" and either sell the gift on ebay, give it away, throw it away, or take it back to the store and return it for something else.

Politely say thank you, or write a note to the giver if he/she wasn't present. The old saying "it's the thought that counts" really does apply.

say thank you. return or re-gift the item but don't let the person know. besides, it's not the item it's the sentiment behind the gesture. unless it's a pile of $h1t, then i would suggest throwing it at them.
