My cat died recently. I have heard that cats do best in pairs. They form lifetime friendships. The two cats had only been together for about 5 months. I want my other cat to have a good buddy. He is only 14 months old. How long should I wait to bring in a new cat? I don't want to make him mad or sad cause he misses his old buddy.

If you don't feel he is grieving a lot for the cat who died you can move on getting another cat very soon. The younger he is the more quickly he will accept another cat so I wouldn't wait for many months to do it.

Any combination of cats is always an iffy situation - a new cat may become a good buddy or not and that is not predictable. His youth and the fact that he has had another cat around are on your side for a successful combination. You could go with a male or female as long as both are neutered. Many cats of one and two years of age are available for adoption at shelters now. I wouldn't wait till April or May for a kitten.

You can go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Cat to Cat Introductions" to familiarize yourself with the issues of making the adjustment period go smoothly for both cats.

Personally, I don't own any cats, but my best friend is a cat NUT!! I think that if you goet another buddy for your baby now, it will adjust well. Just remember to introduce them slowly to each other to make sure there are no conflicts that might result in injury. Kitty's are fairly accepting to other cats from what I've seen of the 9 felines that my friend owns. So if YOU"RE ready for a new baby, it think your little one will be fine with it.

And btw, I'm sorry for the lose of your other baby.

Whenever you are ready to find your furry friend another companion he will be ready to have another friend. Cats do, do really well in pairs and enjoy eachothers company. Your cat may be grieving, but having another friend to play with will definitly lighten up his spirits! I do highly recomened getting another friend for your cat. As long as you are ready to get another one, your cat will be ready aswell.

Don't worry if they don't get along at first. Cats are naturally territorial, especially males. And they have to get used to sharing their space with another cat, but since your cat is already used to sharing, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

Also if you are planning to get another male cat I would make sure he is fixed, aswell as yours. This will prevent spraying and fights. Try to get a cat that is close in age with yours, so they share the same energy level. (younger cats are more high strung then older ones)

I am so sorry for your loss. I wish you the best of luck finding a new furry friend!

The sooner the better, cats do not adjust to well to change, the loss of that other cat is a big change, it is better to change more than one thing at a time, its easier on them that way, atleastt I think so! Good LUck!!
