Bill S, you are referring to WW2 here. The Navajo Codetalkers were exclusively used in the Pacific Theatre against the Japaneese.

World War 1 saw the very first radio transmitters beign used for military purposes, and this was wehre electronic warfare was born. However, there was minimal use of codes and encryption during that war as EW was in its infancy. However, the Germans, after clueing in that they were being spied on in that fashion, were the first ones to use covernames, prowords and basic encryption. Nothing that could hold a candle to the Enigma machine of WW2, let alone modern algorythms, but they started it.

As Bill S said, though, masking the true message of a communication is used to prevent the enemy from knowing what is being said or who they are talking about. No more, no less. It only has minimal use in avoiding divulging positions, for at the same time as radio intercept was born, so was radio direction finding, and as soon as a transmitter puts out energy on the air, it can be DF'ed.

you use it every day when you are dealing with your own finances, work related technology and even daily computing...either on Internet or work network...it keeps phone lines working ,...it keeps the neighbor from having the same garage door opener code as you...it keeps burglars from getting into your home. Code and encryption was the way information was moved between allies and enemies during the war. if you could intercept a coded message and break it you had a distinct advantage over the enemy or you could prepare for a devastating assault that would otherwise kill hundreds of people. that is it in a nutshell

Code and encryption was used during WWI to keep the enemy from finding out where our troops were located, what their intentions were, and other sensitive items from leaking out. The military used the Navajo indian language which was never broken by the enemy.
