My neice just started her period, but she's only 10 1/2 and she's real little for her age, is this normal?

She hasn't even developed yet though, that's what was weird, she's so scared, poor thing, she's mature for her age, but still flat chested and all.

I don't think that that is true. My daughter got her period and she was a very petite girl, she was only 90 pounds when she got her period.
Also, I think you should just tell her doctor at you next visit. Inform them and see what they have to say.
Good Luck =)

I'm 32. I started my period when I was 9 and I was very small for my age. I was short and skinny. However, I did develop breasts at an early age as well. It is possible your niece is already developing breasts they just aren't noticeable. My mom took me to the doc when I was in the 2nd grade because I complained of chest pain. Turns out I was getting my breasts. Only they didn't really show up for another two years. By the time I was in jr. high I was of average size and all the other girls were surpassing me in breast size. So, it isn't always a big deal to develop early. But yes, 10 is very normal. I was 9, my mom was 13 and her mom was 17. So, it varies.

edited to add: I wanted to respond to the person who said you need to be over 100 pounds to get your period. This just isn't true. I was nowhere near 100 pounds. I didn't near 100 pounds until I was much older.

I've heard of girls starting earlier and earlier like 8 and 9!!. Some say it's because of the growth hormones found in the milk, eggs, ect.. I've put my kids on organic everything trying to prevent early developement. I'm hoping it works.

i started mine when I was 9 1/2 or 10. I think I heard somewhere that girls are getting it sooner and sooner due to the additives and junk they add to our food. I also heard that you have to reach around 103 or 113 lbs before you can get it? ( I can't remember the exact #)

I had a friend that got her first period at eight years old. These days, girls are developing earlier. I wouldn't worry.
