If he signed a 4 year contract, then his time in active duty (or reserve) will be up 4 years after the date on that contract. If you can get in contact with him easily, ask him to send you his ETS date. That will be the day that he is released into the IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve)*.

I just had my second year in the Army last Oct. However, I didn't go to Basic until I had been in for nearly a year due to personal issues. Even so, I was able to drill with my unit and that time counted towards my ETS.

*Assuming they don't start the ol' stopgap policy up again.

no no no. the day you are arive at boot camp is the first day of an active duty cantract. every initial contract is for 8 years. if he signed up for 4 years of active duty on june 5, 2002, then on june 4, 2006, his active duty time will be completed. his next 4 years will be in the IRR Inactive Ready Reserves. he will be required to tell the army where he lives and a phone number, but he wont go to weekend drill. however in those 4 years as IRR he can be called back in to service. which does occasionally happen to guys with army jobs that are needed.

The 4 years starts as soon as they sign the final paperwork to join the military. So for example if your boyfriend signed the final paperwork on january 1, 2007 then his 4 years would end on January 1, 2011.
