How come he didn't come home for two months when he was only 3 blocks away living under a porch? He did not return home sooner because your cat did not have a collar with an ID tag! You're lucky someone cared enough about your cat to spend their money on an ad in the newspaper for an ad looking for you, when you didn't care enough about your own cat to buy a collar and an ID tag, and still think it was his/a cat's responsibility to return home to you! Put a collar with an ID tag on your cat because if you make the same mistake again, you may find him dead in the street from being run over by a car!

I am big on keeping cats inside. There are too many things that can happen to them outside. But, if your cat does sneak out on you, they are usually prowling. Could be a female cat is in heat. Could be a lot of things. I cannot stress this enough. Have the cat neutered and that will stop some of his desires to go wandering!

The people who owned our house have a cat who continues to return here--more than two years after their move! They live in the same neighborhood though. No, we don't feed the cat (or pet it due to allergies). I think it just likes the house/yard. All their other cats stay at the new house.

The thing about cats is if they do not like their present accomodations, they just leave. I suspect that there was (or is) something in your home that stressed out your cat. Do you have other pets? Is your home a noisy place? Do you get lots of visitors? Is there somewhere there that the cat can hideout in and feel safe? etc etc. etc. Maybe you need to review the "den" conditions otherwise kitty might run away again.

Cats aren't loyal like dogs, although I had a dog that ran away and never came back, but he was a nomad (the woman who gave me him said her neighbor found him on her porch one day). If a cat finds another place they like, they leave.

Some will, but alot of the time they will find another house where the people feed them and give them attention. Its always good to keep cats indoors, you dont have to worry about them running away, and they are safe from disease, dogs, and cars!

I had a tom cat that disappeared for nearly a year. He showed up one day and walked in the house acting as if he had never been gone!
Cats are weird, but I love them!

Dogs barking and other loud noises may have kept your cat from coming home if it was really scared.
