A friend of our family's went to a residential rehab for alcoholism. I don't remember the name of the facility off the top of my head, but it was located in Virginia. It's been about a year and a half since she left..and she's a whole new person. Full of joy and so alive. I can't recommend substance abuse treatment enough.

I've been a counsellor in two residential drug rehab programs. When you have a good match between what the program offers and the person entering rehab, it has a good chance of working. That is providing the person entering rehab is really motivated to make the changes, all the changes, and has a good support system on the outside to continue when they leave. For people who enter rehab because of legal or family/friends pressure, rather than their own choice, the chance of sucess is small, no matter how good the program is. A program of at least 90 days is about the minimum amount of time I would say is needed, and I also think it's best if it is geographically apart from where they normally live. A change of scenery helps set the tone mentally for the changes in lifestyle which are coming. I don't think there is one area of the country or even any one rehab clinic which has the market cornered as far as recovery rates. It's more important for you to shop around different clinics and programs to find the one you think fits best. Of course, there are sometimes financial and insurance issues to be concerned with as well, and that's a subject you have to take up with the company providing it. Some of them have clinics/programs they use, and some they will not. In the end, what really makes or breaks the whole deal depends on the person, and how badly they want to suceed.

First I went to this half way house where they have out patient treatment. I forget the name of the place. Then I went to AA for about 4 months straight, we're talking every night!!! Now I am 2 1/2 years sober and feeling so good about it.. Good luck to you and your loved ones..
