The strange thing about it is...
if I break up with him,
I still have to take him to this school dance.
(He goes to a different school)
And so I don't know how to tell him.

Say it straight and not hurtful. It makes it worse to draw it out. Being hurtful can create confrontation.

Just come right out and say you think we should see other people or just tell her or him that you care about them but don't want to be committed to anyone person at this time. Duh...
