My heroes are the fighting men and women in the military. They walk into harms way every single day without a thought about their self. In today's society that takes a special kind of person.
Next, are the firemen and the policemen, who know their job could take their life any day yet never let it hinder their job.

the definition of a hero is some one who puts their life or self in jeopardy for the benefit of others with out self interest, and I think that would include any one for example going into a burning building to save some one else,( not a fireman) as that is a firemans job, and he knows when there is to much risk and generally won't take a big risk, look at how they performed In L.A.nor do I consider a cop a hero just because he has a badge and gun , normally his job has less risk than most tradesman, fire man the same, how ever if a cop really shows courage and saves some one from a dangerous situation such as the lady cop in Florida did ,she is a hero, she laid down on a kid and shot it out with some hoods, she was wounded in the process, but she no doubt saved the kids life, a man who goes into combat knowing he is at risk but, will go to protect his country is a hero, and like the Mexican guy who threw his body on a grenade to save his Buddy's is damned sure a hero, he paid with his life, when you mentoned Viet Nam most service men either have kids at home or little brothers , sisters nephews etc, so when they see a child who looks so hungry it is only natural to want to give them candy or ?? it has cost many of them their lives, Little kid on a bicycle ride into a group of military men with a bicycle loaded with explosives killing himself along with the G.Is

A hero for me is someone who does thier job inspite of the risk to themselves. This does not need to be done in he military but this is where it happens frequently.
The history of Vietnam is troubleing. Similar to other situations where you cannot tell the enemy from friendlies. A place where you get a wave and a smile from someone who tries to kill you immediatly after. In an uncontrolled situation it can lead to what would be called a war crime. This did happen in Vietnam there is no getting around it.

Any person who has served, past or present, war or "peace". My Dad served in Korea. No one remembers that one. He didn't talk about it until he was in his late 60's. My son, almost 21 is in the Illinois National Guard Reserve. When he came back from boot camp, a woman at the airport walked up to him and called him a baby killer. Don't think that line was reserved for Viet Nam. He said that another service guy had a woman spit on him just moments before that. God Bless all our service men and women!

Heroes are sandwiches that you can only get in the Northeast. In the midwest they are called hoggies, and they suck.
Regarding military heroes, there are none on the battle field. Those who are decorated after the fact never went for hero status they just did their job.
Except John Kerry. He is just a scumbag.

I really don't have a true comment, except this: My hero doesn't wear a cape, my hero wears combat boots.
Kudos to you for putting that stuff above!
