Is it safe to dye my hair while pregnant?
There are conflicting reports about the safety of hair dye during pregnancy: Several studies found no ill effects on pregnant rodents given 100 times the typical human dose of these products, whereas British researchers reported chromosome damage among women who dyed their hair. Although this study was not conducted on pregnant women, this finding suggests that there may be some risk to coloring your hair while pregnant.

As a precaution, some physicians advise you to avoid hair color until after your first trimester (the period when your baby's vital organs, head, body and limbs form). Colorants made from vegetable dyes such as henna are preferable to the chemical dyes used in permanent and semi-permanent formulas. Recent studies indicate that hair dyes contain relatively high levels of bio-available lead acetate that can be harmful to the fetus, particularly the nervous system and brain. Check the product label and avoid lead based hair products.

You can't do anything while you're pregnant. If a pregnancy has a bad outcome, a woman can sue and an American court will probably give her a large award. It really doesn't matter what she blames it on, or whether that product has anything to do with the outcome. As long as liability cases are sent to juries there will be nothing safe for you to do. It's hard to imagine how a significant amount of any chemical could be absorbed through the scalp, but that's really quite beside the point these days.

I love this question cause everyone says no usually. Yes its safe there use to be a concern that the chemicals seep into th scalp and can get into your bloodstream therefor get to the baby. Even if it did not enough chemical would get into the scalp to do damage. If you do make sure you do it in a well ventilated area because the smell can really get to you. also be careful of reds and blonds because of the hormones in your body they may not come out how you expect them too. I dye my hair and bleached my hair during my pregnancies. I have nothing but healthy babies. The doctors and np's i work for don't advise against it either.

I asked my hairstylist if it was okay and if it would work, because I was told that when you are pregnant the dye won't take and she aid yes it would take dye and no it wouldn't hurt the baby. (the dye does not go inside your bloodstream obviously).

I would like to point out that alot of expectant mothers are stylists and use the dye throughout their pregnancies while they are working.

You could wear a mask while getting your hair dyed if that makes you feel better. That way it would filter the fumes.

I waited until after I was 12 weeks before getting my hair dyed back to the original color. It has something to do with the chemicals and the time of the developing baby. I only did it once and waited until after the baby to do it again. Better safe than sorry.

I had my color foiled in while pregnant. None of the chemicals actually came in contact with my scalp. Hair color is absorbed through your scalp and can actually be detected in your urine, so I thought I should keep it off my scalp until after the baby was born. I still get foils to this day and had my son over 3 years ago!

Absolutely not. They have done tests that prove that the dye can somehow affect the baby very badly. Just wait it out.
