I have (what I think...) is a good idea for a film, but have no idea what to do with this idea.

What should I do...?

Write a screen play or get someone else who thinks it is a good idea and you two together write a screen play. Send it to a movie prodcution company. Contact independent film companies first. You may have a better chance at success.

Of course if you know anyone with loose connections with the film industry see if you can get someone to just create the film based off your original idea. Or just buy a camcorder and go at it!

Get a few 3 or 4 friend together preferably both sexes.Explain your basic synopsis, and then have a group brainstorm. Its amazing what comes out of a brainstorm.
When you have the ideas together play around with them till it feels just right .
Write a simple 1st draft,refine and write 2nd etc.
When the script is as good as it gets its time to do some story boarding. Put main scenes in sequence drawn onto sheets of paper, put them up around the room.
You may then want to refine the storyline, add characters scenes or delete some.
Keep having regular brain storms.
Once you have the screen play script finished, you are ready to begin. Sort out your locations. Make sure you apply and get permits. If they are needed.Don't film without them.
Cast your film and find any extras etc.
Allocate who is responsible for what, and they know what they are doing so does everyone involved.
If you want it to work be serious, As in,if someone starts messing around and playfully tries to sabotage scenes or such.
Say Bye, Bye.Make sure you stick to it!
Everyone is replaceable.
Else you will find people will start coming and going and doing what they please, when they pleas.
Work out your time target for shooting the film and organise the best order to shoot them in.
Don't be sloppy on continuity.Organise somewhere to edit etc.
So now all you have to do is film it!

Good luck!

Write a treatment - just a few pages - outlining the premise and characters you have envisaged. When you have done that post it to yourself special delivery as a sort of rudimentary copyright. Don't open that copy, just file it away in case you have to prove the date in court someday. Then send copies of the treatment out to production houses to see if anyone shows some interest. Most production houses will respond to you even if its with a form letter.
