Responsible breeders don't usually sell their pups until they are at least 8 weeks old. (And in California, breeders, pet stores and shelters are bound by law not to release puppies before 8 weeks.) But it's actually best to leave the pups with their mom for about 9-10 weeks.

During the 6 to 10 week period, the puppies learn "pack manners" from their moms, and start to show their true personalities.

Puppies that are 6 weeks old, don't have all of their shots yet, and don't have their personalities fully developed yet so you don't really know what kind of dog you're getting.

NO puppy (or kitten for that matter) should be separated from thier mothers before 8 weeks. It is actually better to wait longer, like 10-12 weeks. No good breeder will let thier puppies go before 8 weeks. Also, I've heard that it is safer to wait longer than 8 weeks for toy breeds such as chi's. Any earlier can cause behavior or develpomental problems.

What alot of people dont understand is that, although th pups may be weaned at 6 weeks, thay are still learning thing from their mother and litter mates. If you remove them ANY sooner than 8 weeks, you are severly limiting their development. They will not understand how to be dogs, they may become very dog aggressive (VERY bad in a dog that size, because nearly EVERY dog is the wrong dog to pick a fight with) because they were not done learning what is acceptable from the mother and the littermates. They may become fearful or too attached to humans. They could also be overly dominant.

The spelling is Chihuahua. If you're considering buying one, I would re-think your idea. You don't even know how to spell the breed. How do you know anything about the breed?

No, 6 weeks is WAY too young for a toy/small breed puppy to go. I would say 10-12 weeks old for a toy/small breed puppy to go to a new home.

actually, unlike some other replies, the chihuahua can be weened 4-5 weeks if you get his vaccinations at 6. The maternal antibodies in the mothers milk last for 2 weeks in the pups system after being weaned. As long as you get the pup his vacc's now, then you should have a healthy puppy. You can start on puppy food, preferably small kibbles that are moistened by water. Wet food is too fattening and may cause diarrhea. Chihuhua pups are prone to getting hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so please keep the pup fed every 4 hours until about 12 weeks old, then you can feed 3 times a day. Keep some karo syrup in the counter in case the pup shows signs of low blood sugar (signs are wobbly when walks or cannot walk, difficulty holding head up, etc) Good luck!

If at 6 weeks the puppy has been weened and is eating/drinking normal it should be fine.

Toy breeds should stay with their mother and litter mates for AT LEAST 8 weeks. Some breeders keep the toy breeds for 12 weeks. Never would I think it would be OK to allow the pups to go at 6 weeks.

Its best to leave chihuahuas with their mom until 12 weeks. For reasons of hypoglycemia and socialization. Here is an article to read

You can take the pup at 6 weeks, but my experience has been that the dog will be better prepared and socialized if you wait until 8 weeks. If you check around at some of the best breeders, you'll see that they all wait until then.
