Time was, we were told that fluorescent lights consumed an hour's worth of electricity every time you turned them on. Was this true? Is this still true for the bulb-socket varieties that seem to take a minute or so to "heat up"? Are they best used where they're going to be turned on and left on, or are you saving money by using them where they'll only be on for a few minutes at a time, like a bathroom?

no it's not true that they consume an hours energy to light up. The new florecents come on full strength right away just like regular incandecant bulbs. We just replaced all our bulbs with them and actually have more light with less energy.

Good to see the Mythbusters referred to...

The fluorescent lights of the 50's DID eat up juice when starting. That was because of their ballasts... ancient technology.

I've used the fluorescent bulbs for last 6 years... the electrical portion of my bill dropped by half. Only place it didn't work well was the sockets on a dimmer.

I have been using the bulbs for over a year. None have burned out and my electric bills are one-half of my neighbor's. I burn lights night and day. I think you will be pleased with the results if you use the bulbs.

Not true. They even did this on MythBusters TV show. The bulbs do actually use a bit more on start-up but the breakeven point is about 1/3 of a second.

and by the way... there is no Global Warming.

the do draw more energy the instant after the switch is flipped than when they are operating normally, but so does an incandescent bulb.
the energy savings of compact fluorescents are a wonderful thing.

also, as someone else said, global warming has nothing to do w/mankind, if it is happening at all.
