If the night's main activity is consuming alcoholic beverages I end up sleeping only 2 or 3 hours and then wake up feeling ok. Does anybody know why this happens, have this happen to them? It's really annoying because I wake up with energy and there's nothing to do Sunday morning in Iowa.

Let me reiterate, kids. It's just from a normal Saturday night at the bar, 5 to 8 drinks. Other than that I might have a beer at dinner throughout the week.
Usually Sam Adams. After drinking that stuff, Bud is like water.

Thank your lucky stars!!! The older you get, the worse you will feel. And yes it does affect your REM sleep. I always tend to sleep alot less if I've drank. But it will catch up so enjoy it while it lasts. And since there's nothing to do Sun morn in Iowa....I DO NOT recommend starting all over again:)

When I was drinking heavily ( about 4 times a week and when I drank it was often more than enough), I would only get 3-4 hours of sleep. Not only could I not sleep, but I had bizarre dreams. I had no idea how out of control my drinking was until this sleeping issue. I can't think of another reason why this might happen. I'll put this question on my watchlist as answers should be interesting. Take care and btw, see if you can cut down your drinking ( have just two drinks) and see if the same happens.

8 hours of sleep a day is ********, it's more like 6-7. More than 2-3 though. I used to run on about four to five hours sleep a day, so I sort of know how you must be feelng. Trust me, you think you're fine until you get your normal amount of sleep one day. Then you'll realise what you've missed, what you're supposed to feel like. Yes, lack of sleep is something bad. It causes a lot of health conditions. Basically, your brain can't function as well, which is something you need as a student. Slowed word recall, memory lapses, less brain growth, but also aching muscles, dizziness and nausea, and dry mouth. Increased blood pressure, increased risk for diabetes, and increased risk of fibromyalgia too by the way. It's not the lack of sleep that does this though, it's the lack of REM sleep. There are alternative sleep cycles in which you basically speed up the time it takes to get to your REM sleep (= more REM sleeps in a short amount of time) which will help. And.. go buy yourself some melatonin.

Consuming mass quantities of alcohol is like an advertisement that is built in with alcohol. It tells you, "Why are you wasting time sleeping when you could be up drinking?" It is a mystery to me too but it makes me get up and fix another drink for myself and enjoy the day a lot more than it would be without alcohol.

You are an alcoholic if you wake up fine only 3 hours after heavy drinking.

Alcoholism can cause insomia. You are likely passing out from being drunk, then when the alcohol wears off, you can not obtain normal sleep.

I had the same thing happen to me. I do not know why this happens to certain people. My brother can sleep for hours on end, but not me.

Alcohol is a stimulant that acts as a depressant. You drink, you get a bit energized, then you crash... but not for long as, remember it IS a stimulant.
