I have a better question. Why would the omnipotent creator of the Universe get mad at parts of Himself and put them in a pit of fire forever? If God is schizophrenic, all bets are off; kiss your @$$ goodbye and then some. If He is NOT, then the question is meaningless and the whole setup as advertised is a cruel farce.
If you delve into serious Biblical history, one thing you'll discover is that Sheyol was a large pit outside Jerusalem used for burning garbage and corpses. It doesn't take Stephen Hawking to see a thread between that and the "Hell" the evangelists use as a boogeyman to keep the offering plates filled.
If there IS a God as advertised, then He is logical and balanced and hence, Hell is an impossibility. I give Him enough credit to believe the latter. Stop freaking out and tying yourself in a knot with Scripture. Its not meant for that; its meant to help you grow to a point where you can reach your best potential, not waste your life waiting for the hammer to fall. If God loves you, eternal fire makes no sense. That's kind of a shame, since it lets Pat Robertson off the hook, BWAHAHAHA!!!

Actually I believe that someone called Jesus most likely actually existed but I don't believe he is the son of God and I don't think he ever claimed to be. He was a socialist, perhaps even an Anarchist and he stood for human rights in a time of extreme oppression, so there is no way someone like that would appreciate the notion of a Hell of eternal fire! You are living a Christian-induced nightmare!

(at least follow the first link, ok?)
Pascal's wager:
"If god exists, it's infinitely better to believe, since you get heaven instead of hell for eternity. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter since you're dead anyway. So overall it's better to believe"
This is, of course, false.
Some of the problems with the argument:
* The implied assumption that god may exist (with a 50% probability, no less!)
* The assumption that there is an afterlife with a heaven and hell
* The assumption that the god cares about belief in him/her above all else
* The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.
* The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. You have lost a great deal, from time praying to a nonexistent entity (somebody mentioned just today praying several hours a day!!!) to morality (your god may ask you to hurt other people) and much more besides.
* The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?
* The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.

Right now, today, all you people (including the ones you say are good but, do not believe in Jesus) have the chance to convert and choose to NOT go to Hell. If you do not choose Jesus then you CHOOSE Hell. Why would God go against what you choose for yourself. This is free will. If a person does not choose Jesus, in effect he is choosing sin as Jesus puts sin to death on the cross.

I don't mean to offend you, but you have the whole Hell thing wrong for starters... but you aren't alone!
The reason the devil is so anxious to have people believe the lies about the "state of the dead" is so he can lead us from knowing the Truth-- Jesus loves you... now, even that sounds corny, so misused it has become... but it's a fact. And Jesus is drawing you through love, not through fear and lies (that's the Devil's department). The Devil, or Lucifer, is the arrogant, insane one here who seeks to have all bow down to him... and for what reason? Because he was spurned in his pride. So he goes about promoting the wrong image of Jesus and God, any way he can... and gets lots of help too.
Jesus never forces people to come to him, but is every drawing you nearer. You have the choice whether to look more deeply into His character (and what He wants for you) or not.
Hell is not the old Hellenic version that you refer to. You can learn more about it from a proper study of the Bible. Here are some Real Audio links to Bible Q&As that you might want to listen to, if you are serious about wanting to know about Hell and Jesus:

I think about the same thing, like what about buddist, or hindus, do they all automatically go to hell because they were brought up in a place where god and the whole christan bible was not taught to them? To me that seems wrong. Its like we are being threatened, if you don't believe in god you will go to hell and rot there forever.. That also isn't right and it pushes me even further away from believeing in god and such.. I think my faith in the oh so holy one has diminished completely.

Some Christians believe that nobody will burn in Hell forever, just for a time. I believe they get this by connecting the dots from certain Bible verses and from the fact that they believe mercy and love are God's most important attributes.

The devil himself believes in the EXISTANCE of Jesus. He won't escape hell. It was created for him and his angels ONLY!!!
That others will choose not to be with God for eternity is their choice. They are the only other ones who will join the devil.
It would be a good idea to find the truth of what God is telling you about how to be saved from this horrible eternity.
Matt 25:41-46
41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

What if something about this life, and the next, is just fact? Wouldn't it be like shaking your fist at the moon, to change something, to try and change it, or reason it away, rather than face it head on? You need to get clear on one thing, real quick, and that is that you assume Jesus is about being amused or not? WE are the ones on the way to hell, because of our first and subsequent sins, and it is in our hands, whether or not we change this fate. To not accept what Jesus did, when he was innocent and didn't have to, is to spit upon his sacrifice, for you.. God is ultimate love, and ultimate wisdom. We are not. You need to stop operating as if you know it all, and also entertain the idea, that God is actually out for your good, not bad, nor to just take away your fun in life. We get a second chance, we get a relationship with the God of the universe, we get to live a life with him forever, that is what we were really made for. IT is for those reasons, that I choose him, not at all to avoid hell.
