There are some days that I literally would like to just sleep all day, I know I can't so I don't, but my body just feels dead dawg tired. My husband says it's beacuse I've had too much sleep. I've always thought that if I'm tired I should sleep, the body telling me to do so... is this true?

Actually, research has shown that adults who sleep an average of more than 9 hours per night have a significantly increased risk of early death. Whether the increased sleep is the cause or an effect of another health condition is another question. In any case, I would consult a doctor if I were an adult sleeping more than 63 hours a week.
On the other hand, if you have built up a sleep debt over the week, catching up on the weekends--while disruptive to your workweek sleeping habits--may be necessary. In other words, if you've been burning the midnight oil all week and averaging 3-6 hours like I used to do in college (not recommended), you may need to sleep late Saturday, but that means you get sleepy later on Sunday night, and the cycle starts all over again.
There are several reasons why you might sleep more than normal.
1) Caffeine, alcohol, or drugs reduce the effectiveness of the sleep you get.
2) You don't dream. Years ago, researchers studying REM or the dreaming stage of sleep woke up their subjects every time they detected that the sleepers were dreaming (rapid eye movement). The purpose of the study was to record the dreams, but they found that the subjects slept for days and never felt rested.
3) Sleep apnea. Tends to happen to babies, or overweight people who snore. Sometimes they quit breathing in the middle of the night, in which case they either die or yank themselves out of a deep sleep. Again, this prevents them from feeling rested, and they are often grumpy. Doctors may precribe sleeping with a mask that forces oxygen into your lungs.
4) Depression. Depression can cause you to sleep too much or not enough.

If your body is tired, SLEEP!!! You may need it!
If you are not in a depressive state, you may just be tired. I have sleep all day before, gotten up had dinner and slept all night. When I got up the next day, I felt great. Of course, this was after a long week of travel and work and I was completely exhausted. Everyone has their points of exhaustion. You may need some sleep.
Don't push too far...you body might decide to stop and take its own break!
Turn in early and take the long sleep break!
Enjoy!

Usually sleeping a lot is a sign of depression.
Also, if you sleep a lot, you want to sleep more. You just have to accept the tiredness. It's strange because you might think that if you're tired, you should sleep more. But, if you sleep more, you feel more tired.
I guess whatever you're doing, sleeping or otherwise, as long as you really feel what you're going through, it should be O.K.
People that sleep a lot sometimes tend to not be good friends as it's hard to organize anything like fun daytrips.

Yes, there is in fact such a thing as too much sleep. When you get too much sleep, you actually feel tired. But you don't really need more sleep. As an adult, you should probably get no more than 8-9 hours per night.

It can be a sign of depression but you probably already knew of that. There are also people who have had brain injuries and excessive sleep is a normal healing process. There are other conditions that can cause too much sleeping too. Maybe you ought to get a check-up with the doctor.
If I sleep too much, I end up with a sleep "hangover" headache.
