The best place to start is on the ground in the local library nearest the area in question, in their local studies collection:

Halsey Road
Kempston
MK42 8AU
Tel: 01234 276453

As far as online research goes, the best publisher of old English town and village photos is the Francis Frith archive (www.francisfrith.com), but the 8 hits showing for "Kempston" are 1950s/60s only - nothing earlier. The only other advice is to google, google, google or yahoo, yahoo, yahoo, depending on your search engine!!
