It means the essence of your being. I Biblical times they of course didn't realise that the brain was the seat of all things cognative. What they did know was that powerful emotion often elicites sensations in the chest and that when the heart stopped beating, death had occured. Basically it symbolizes the same thing that it is usually used to symbolize today. I hope that helps. :-)

That's easy... Guys are intimidated and girls are jealous of how stunningly beautiful you are. Most people assume that you're stuck up. Goes to show you that you can't judge a book by it's cover. Most of the girls I date have very similar features and get the same responses. Don't change a thing about yourself, but get used to people having the wrong impression. The ones worth knowing will take the time to find out that you are kind and caring.

Historically the heart is the symbol of life. When the heart ceases so does life. Jesus is life eternal and life for ever In Pupae New Guinea missionaries were trying to teach that Jesus is life.
They were having a bad time because as it turned out they believed that the stomach was life
(Don't eat you die) the missionaries were able to explain life because of this info

Unless it's talking about the physical heart. it's talking about the figurative heart that is the emotion of love and warm feelings.

what i find interesting is the fact that the bible says that we should not lean toward our hearts desire because the heart is selfish and treacherous. instead we should keep it in check with our reasoning ability and our biblically trained conscious.

In the Old Testament, the "heart" is actually the seat of what we call the "mind," whereas the "bowels" are what we would call the "heart," the seat of the emotions. Everything is one story down.

It represents the center of a person's being. In some cultures the word "bowels" is used. In other, the soul, or the mind.

Various scriptures refer to knowing in the heart, loving with the heart, fearing with the heart, etc... This indicates to me that it is speaking of the mind.
