I am a volunteer firefighter in Alabama. My station is looking to buy new radios. Anyone got any recommendations. We only use a few channels, and most of them have 100+ so that shouldnt be a problem. Our current ones are 150mhz, but we would like to upgrade to 400mhz if they are not too expensive. We have looked at a few Uniden Bearcats, but for whatever reason a lot of them say Nascar which is kind of stupid. We would like to keep them under $120 because we have to buy so many, we are volunteer, and we are financed by the government......that should tell you enough. Thanks for your help.
God Bless.

Mobile Alabama has city auctions occasionally were they sell old radio's, police cars or whatever.

You might want to look into that in the major cities in Alabama, I'd think if one city does it they all probably do.

We went through a lot of this with one of our local volunteer fire departments as well. First of all, what you need to do is find out how much money you are going to be able to spend on the radios. Cause I can tell you right now, quality does effect the price. You do not want to pay bottom dollar on radios, especially when they are going to be used in the fire service.

Due to the tight budget that all volunteer departments suffer from, even grants don't get you all that you need. So you need to start planning in the annual budget to buy a couple of radios each year in addition to the ones that you plan on getting with grants and such.

To be honest, we tried this new company out. At least it is semi- new. I haven't heard of them till about two years ago. They are called Vertext Standard. They are really good and the don't not as expensive as Motorola or Kenwood. I was really really impressed with them. They have base stations, handhelds, mobiles, and more. They are really versatile. That is the company that I would recommend.

Check out the website they have. You can find a local dealer on there. www.vertextstandard.com

Good luck
