If we accept the idea that pulling out of Iraq at the present time is not a viable option, we must also accept the fact that we don't have enough troops in Iraq at present to even secure a city - let alone the entire country.
We are in a very complex position - on the one hand, we cannot allow the Islamic terrorists' tactics of indiscriminate murder and terror to result in any kind of victory for them - and on the other hand, it is becoming a very credible argument that this war may not be winnable without the support of the majority of the Iraqi people - and it isn't clear that this is or will ever be the case.
The one thing that I don't think can be argued is the fact that what we are doing now and our present policies aren't working very well, to say the least.

Bush went into this war with apparent evidence of weapons of mass destruction with everyone's support. As soon as no such weapons were found and public opinion changed fingers started to be pointed. So just like the kid who would come to your house and pull out all your toys and then immediately leave. Bush is left cleaning up the mess. Will the troops help? Probably not. Not without the support from this country that is at war. It's a terrible mess. I'm sure the Islamic Terrorists laugh every time we start blaming Bush for a mess that virtually all voted to go into. This is bigger than just a Democrat versus Republican debate.

It can help stablize Iraq. Many will admit that one of Bush's failures is not putting enough troops in Iraq to help stabilize matters. More troops can help speed up the process of handing over security to Iraqi forces.
The thinking is, more troops, more results.
You don't have to agree with it but at least educate yourself about pros and cons of strategy in Iraq. It's more complicated then it seems.

In my opinion the only way that sending more troops in would be to protect the borders. Make sure that no one leaves, and no one comes in, and let the Iraqi government, police, and military have to deal with their own people. We have been handing over many responsibilities to the IPs and IM but we need to make the government work for itself. I think we can help make sure that there aren't any weapons coming in from the Syrian border or Iranian border. But honestly the only way for us to really "help" the Iraqi people is to make them do it for themselves.

Not without a specific purpose for them. I believe we have mismanaged the troops we already have there. We don't have an effective traning program for the Iraqi forces, who need to take over THIS year.
Wow, this answer will put me over 5,000 into level 5. :)
