as a parent, you DO take care of them forever - in some capacity --- the role just changes as each new phase is entered. For instance, I would not rock, nurse, and sing my 30 year old daughter to sleep, but I would do that when she was an infant - when she's 30 my role as her parent changes in HOW i parent her, but it doesn't change that I WILL be parenting her.
Does that make sense?

I think that is kind of a strange question.
First of all you are not a parent for the first 18 years of your childs life. You are a parent until the day you die. In a way parents do take care of their children forever.
However there comes a point where the children need to grow up and be adults. Just think if everyone in the world took care of their children forever and never taught them how to take care of themselves then what would happen to this world when the parents die. No one would know what to do or how to keep on living. People do not live forever. It is up to the parents to teach children the skills they need to get by in life on their own.
I have lived on my own for many many years. Pay my bills, raise my children etc. BUT I do know that when it comes to my parents if I need them they will be there for me.

You are not a parent I assume? If you were you wouldn't need to ask that question! I agree with the majority of the answers already on here so I will just say- wait till you have kids and they turn 20 or 25 and still live at home, no job, no life and lay around and complain about it all the time! Then you will know why we don't want to take care of kid forever!

Parents do want to take care of their children forever, they just don't have the capacity to do so.

If they took care of you forever (I assume you mean financially), they wouldn't be fulfilling their parental responsibilities to teach you how to become an adult. And more importantly, why would you want to be taken care of all your life. Don't you have any self-respect or ambition? Don't you want to be an adult so people would treat you like an adult?
