Is it true that, since Quran is a book written by God himself, it should not be translated into other languages, and that the believers should rather memorize it by heart?

Quran was revealed to Muhammad through Angel Gabriel (Gibrael) by the Almighty God over a period of 23 years. It was recorded by the prophet through his companions and memorised by many of his companions. Gabriel also reviewed the same with the prophet periodically to assure correctness.
Almighy God always sent messages through Prophets in the language of the prophet and the immediate people involved. However, for the message to be passed on to other people, it can be translated with the contents of the translation verified by Islamic scholars. One such transaltion available world wide is the translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Another one available is from Marmaduke Pickthall. Transaltion helps those Muslims as well as non-Muslim whose language is not Arabic to undeerstand the message in the Quran and only a small percentage of Muslims are Arabs. Understanding the Quran is the key for Muslim to live by it and for non-Muslim to understand it.
However, to maintain global uniformity in recitation during five daily prayers, Muslim memorize short verses from Quran in the language of the Quran, Arabic (and hopefully striving to understand the meanings as well)

You can find the Quran in many languages now. The Quran is a holy book that have not been changed like the Bible. There is only one version and God have promised to protect the Quran so people won't change it and put what they like and erase what doesn't pleases them and not fit their hidden agenda.
The sick comments I read on this site is crazy. before anyone judge a religion they should go out and gain knowledge on their own instead of just sitting there and be fed all those stereotypes and bias information. There is good and bad in every religion and you find extremists who don't represent the whole population. A side note: Islam is the fastest growing religion on Earth even after 9/11. The Quran don't preach violence and that is clear only to those that give the time and have the courage to find the truth.

We can translate the meaning of the Quran but it will never be the same as the actual word of God; only the next best thing. Of course we can try though! No one should be barred from God's mercy and word.

It is translated into many languages. But as Arabic is a complex language a lot of things are lost in translation and it is best to learn Arabic and read it in its original language. Not a word has been changed in the original Quran but translated versions can be interpreted wrongly or loose there full meaning.
emmyduckie........there are plenty of "official" translated version. Again people commenting on something they know nothing about. Yawn.

That is the belief. A reading of the Q'uran is only valid in Arabic.
But, there are English translations available, they just aren't official.

The fact that there are at least 4 different 'real' versions of the Koran in the original Arabic shows that it was written by MAN and not by God (actually Allah, who is not the same as YHWH). There was also no written book called the Koran until at least 40 years after the death of Muhammad, meaning there is no way he could have written it himself; it was created by his followers.

Not many ears ago if one wished to follow the moon god he or she had to learn Arabic. There are now many translations or versions;
Arabic + English versions by Yusuf Ali, Shakia, and Pictall.
The Wahhabi have taken it upon themselves to be the protectors, and whenever possible, they search to make certain that all the copies correspond to their own.
It was written by Mo. with the help of his Catholic Wife - claiming it was dictated by the Archangel Gabriel.
It was quite possible that indeed it was a demon doing the dictating.
It is a rhythmic book, in Arabic, that can easily be "parroted" from memory.
Knowing what it says is of little importance. The Mullahs tell the believers what it REALLY means and no thinking of analyzing is allowed.

funny how every nation, demographic, or group of people like to make up different absurd rules to follow when it comes to religion.
my god doesn't tell me to read his word in a specific way, just to learn it and live it.
