The only thing i know that gives off white lingering smoke is bad valve guide seals and worn piston oil rings. With that said you probably need an overhaul at most a rebuild. Bad head gaskets give off white steam followed by antfreeze coming out of the tailpipe. There is a difference in that type of so called "white smoke". True test of the head gasket issue, check the dipstick. If you see that the oil looks like grey pudding of some sort thats a blown headgasket. Another sign that the antifreeze has been leaking from where it blew and has been contaminating the oil in the crankcase.

Please add details like how hot did the car get how many miles year make model size of the motor. Many times old worn motors never stop smoking after the water/coolant corrodes the piston rings or the motor is run hot because the temp gauge is not in the coolant. Motors burn oil as they wear valve guides piston rings faulty crank case ventilation systems. You'll have to drive that motor to see how much oil it actually uses each 1,000 miles. Puffy white smoke could even be a brake booster full of brake fluid and that fluid being sucked into the motor. Or alternately a bad vacuum modulator automatic trans sucking in automatic trans fluid. The mechanic and probably you too did not drive the car before the gasket was replaced he you did not know the condition of the motor. Before spending a pile fo cash have a compression test performed and CLY leakage test. Just remember a head gasket and Cly head overhaul is not a new motor. You may be shopping for a good running used motor before it is all said and done. Emission controls like cat converter can't take lots of oil comsumption and may also need replacing. Actually if the cat converter is working properly the cat will after burn the oil and eliminate the smoke. Good Luck

Here's a tutorial for all the dipsh**s in here with smartass answers.
White Smoke = Coolant
Blue Smoke = oil
Black Smoke = fuel related.
You likely have a myriad of issues. Could have a broken or stuck oil rings. Maybe a weeping headgasket as well. The car is 17 years old. Hell it's lasted at least 10 years longer than any GM product I'm familiar with. Look into a reman engine. It's cheaper than 5 more years of car payments.

It does not sound like the head gasket if the head gasket was failing you would be burning anti-freeze and the car would be over-heating. Since this is not the case it sounds like you need a valve job, rings, pistons basically engine rebuild if you notice that you are also losing lots of rad fluid then it is time for a new head gasket but with the age of the car I would say it is time to find yourself a new one. Good Luck.

How much smoke, and head gasket, possibly rings, Is your filter on tight, Front and Rear main seals leaking or oil pan gasket ?check them, that could be where the oil is going.the smoke does sound like head gasket & rings , in summer time use a thick weight oil like shell, castrol rottella that what I use, rottella is fine for gas engines, winter use what it calls for.also WIX oil filter is great they have a flap in it to hold oil in the motor when you turn it off,no more dry starts your engine will last longer.

I would say yes. It sounds like either your head gaskets are bad or you have busted a seal somewhere.
